Neem Oil And Insects

Neem Oil and Insects

Just Say “NO” To Chemicals

Are you one of those people who love to be outside during spring and summer but then get eaten alive by biting insects? Bug bites can turn a fun day outside into a miserable experience. The problem is that in order to stop the bugs from biting we have been led to believe that we need to use very strong, and very toxic pesticides on our skin and bodies.

Go to the pharmacy and look at the bug sprays. You’ll find that in most insect repellents, even some that claim to be natural, are one of two pesticides: DEET or permethrin. DEET is known as the “gold standard” for insect repellents, but it is also highly toxic and not really suitable for children or pregnant women. Permethrin is a known neurotoxin that produces symptoms similar to those of DEET and also DDT. Some might say that the risks of these bug repellants out-weigh the benefits. Yuck!

Neem Oil & Other Natural Oils

The Neem tree has been used for thousands of years for its relief from the high temperatures of the summer and the biting insects that the season brings. In the sun and heat, this evergreen tree is a haven to many communities with its cooling shade. The Neem tree and those taking shelter under its canopy are also safe from bugs and biting insects because of its natural repellent action.

Scientific research has confirmed that Neem Oil is a powerful, natural insect repellent*. Neem Oil, pressed from the seeds of the Neem tree, is a mixture of bioactive components**. Azadirachtin is the most active component and naturally repels pests. Azadirachtin can also reduce the feeding and biting of insects. Furthermore, it interferes with insect hormone systems, making it harder for insects to grow and lay eggs.

Other natural ingredients and essential oils are also very good at deterring biting bugs. You may have even seen these in outdoor candles and sprays:

  • Lemongrass
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Citronella oil
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint

Finding Natural Outdoor Protection

Neem Oil can be found in garden supply stores made specifically for garden plants as a natural insecticide. But, to bring the powerful, natural, repelling qualities to your skin, look for cosmetic grade Neem Oil made solely for use in topical applications. You can find these Neem products at your local Whole Foods Market, or natural grocery store. Neem Oil is also non-toxic to children and pets which makes it wonderful for the whole family.

Outdoor sprays like JustNeem’s Adios*** contain Neem Oil blended with other essential oils named above that are very effective. You can also find Neem Oil in products like body lotions, toothpaste, cosmetics, soaps. You can even add our Neem Cure to your or your pet’s shampoo.

One unique and very useful property of Adios is that it can be used on insect bites to reduce the itching and swelling. Neem oil contains anti-histamines that are responsible for this effect.

Don’t let bugs get you down. Get out there and enjoy the great outdoors safely.

*** The EPA approved cold-pressed Neem oil as an insect repellent in 2010.
