How Neem Oil is Good for Dry, Cracked, and Itchy Skin

Neem oil has been used for centuries to remove dryness of skin. Neem oil is loaded with antioxidant Vitamin E, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, and palmitic acid. According to research cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center, these base oils play an important role in skin repair. They are very effective moisturizers that lock in moisture where it belongs- inside skin cells. Vitamin E in Neem oil also is a powerful antioxidant that is known to protect skin from degradation and premature aging. Neem oil benefits skin’s natural function to be elastic and protective.

Neem Oil Removes Dryness

With fall upon us and winter around the corner, the time has arrived when skin dries out more easily and causes all sorts of problems. Just as a hot, dry summer makes soil crack, leaving wide spaces between its organic layers, our skin suffers the same from increased temperatures and the constant airflow in our homes during wintertime. In the winter where the cold air outside and the hot air inside create a low relative humidity, our skin turns dry, becomes brittle, easily cracks, peels and begins scaling, according to Mayo Clinic reports.

healthy and dry skin

Problems with Dry Skin

We all know about the condition of “ashy-looking skin.” Through lack of hydration, skin loses its fresh color and elasticity, it starts itching, we start scratching and soon our lower legs, arms, hands, knuckles feel like they are on fire.

Skin is a Physical Barrier

Skin is the human body’s largest organ, with multiple functions that include moisture control, temperature regulation, the sensation for touch and temperature. But what we mostly are not aware of, our skin is a physical barrier that shields us from environmental impacts and microbes.

The Dilemma of a Cracked Skin Barrier

Dry and cracked skin is a sign of skin cells shrinking from lack of water. With the reduced size of skin cells, spaces between the cells grow. In severe cases, dry skin ruptures and starts bleeding. With this condition, skin loses one of its most important functions, its ability to protect from fungi, bacteria, and viruses. The resulting redness and inflammation is the body’s response to microbial infections of the skin.

The Best Quality Anti-Bacterial Neem Oil

The Neem tree produces a variety of anti-infective molecules that are designed to protect the tree from bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Neem oil, extracted from the seeds of the tree, and Neem leaves contain these same protective compounds that JustNeem incorporates into all its products. Even more, Neem from the Sub-Saharan desert, the place where JustNeem purchases it, has been shown to contain significantly higher concentrations of antimicrobial properties than Neem from other parts of the world.

Neem Oil for Skin

Adding Neem oil, Neem lotion, and Neem soap to your daily routine will give you an effective, natural tool to support your skin when the dry winter air moves in and your skin needs a bit of extra help.

Basic Recommendations:

Use moisturizing Face & Body Neem Soap daily. JustNeem soaps are glycerin-based. Glycerin draws moisture from the air to the skin, which means that our soaps do not strip moisture from your skin but add it and therefore keep skin hydrated and soft. And no fear, we only use plant-derived ingredients in all our products, so the glycerin in our Neem soaps is actually produced by the sun.

Use hydrating JustNeem lotion to lubricate dry and cracked skin and thereby lock in its moisture. Use Neem lotion in the morning, evening, and during the day, but in particular after taking a shower to take advantage of the remaining moisture on the skin from washing. Use a lotion that doesn’t just sit on top of your skin, where it is of little use, but gets deeply absorbed into the skin and in between skin cells.

Our JustNeem whole body lotion has an amazing feel to it! It absorbs super quickly and deeply and leaves your skin soft and with a brilliant appearance. And remember, the Neem lotion is loaded with the protective properties of Neem; it carries them deep within providing an invisible shield against microbes and locking in moisture. Choose from several very attractive fragrances including our best sellers “Green Tea” and “Wind & Sea.” And, Just Neem lotion is also available in “Fragrance Free” for super sensitive skin.

Have you ever wondered what ‘rosacea’ really is? What causes it? What are the treatment options? How does it relate to ‘adult acne’? Dr. Peter asked these same questions. Read his findings in this blog post to learn more!

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common facial skin disorder that affects up to 16 million US citizens, with the majority being of Northern European descent.

The onset of Rosacea typically takes place between ages 40 and 50 and is initially associated with a light redness across the facial skin. Over time this can develop into patches of red, dry, and flaky skin with enlarged pores, swelling, inflammation, papular rashes, and plaques (Fig. 1).

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.02.27 PM

The main areas affected are forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin (Fig. 2).  In rare cases, Rosacea can extend to ears, neck, chest, and scalp. Many patients experience irritation, burning or stinging sensation, itching, and dry skin. Surveys have shown that facial redness, bumps, and pimples can significantly impact a patient’s self esteem and emotional well-being.

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 2.02.40 PM

Often referred to as “adult acne,” Rosacea shares some similarities with acne, but the underlying disease mechanism is quite different. Contrary to the causes of acne, which include overproduction of oil (sebum), irregular shedding of dead skin cells, and buildup of bacteria, causes for Rosacea are not well understood. Contributing factors for Rosacea are listed as:

  • Dysfunction of the regulation of facial blood vessel distribution
  • Neurogenic inflammation
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Hair follicle mites called Demodex folliculorum and bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus

Once breakage of skin has occurred, advantageous bacteria and fungi often aggravate the condition and contribute to the inflammation.

Triggers and Aggravation Factors
Several environmental or dietary triggers have also been reported. They are not consistent, though, as individual people experience them differently. High on the list of environmental triggers are living in either hot or cold climates, being exposed to humidity, sun, or experiencing emotional stress.

Dietary triggers include spicy food, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks. Skin care products and cosmetics can also cause episodes and flare-ups. Great care must be taken to choose grooming products to not further irritate but rather calm the skin and provide relief.

Rosacea Treatments

Medical treatments of Rosacea range from no treatment at all for mild to moderate cases to topical or orally administration of antibiotics for more severely affected skin. Facial massages can produce positive results and anti-histamines can be beneficial to help calm redness and inflammation of skin. More radical treatments include alpha-hydroxyl acid peels and vascular laser treatment.

Neem, a Natural Alternative to Conventional Treatments
Neem with its well known antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial activities is uniquely positioned to address several of the triggers and aggravating factors associate with Rosacea.

  • Rich in antihistamines and loaded with the antioxidant vitamin E, Neem swiftly calms inflammation, reduces swelling and burning, and diminishes redness.
  • Neem’s super moisturizing effect restores dry and flaky skin back to its smooth, supple radiance and natural elasticity.
  • Neem’s active antimicrobial and healing properties provide relief to papular rashes, plaques, or otherwise infected skin.

A suggested daily Neem skin care routine includes facial Neem cleanser, Neem moisturizer, Neem Cure oil, and our Neem Clay Mask (use twice a week):

total neem oil packageJustNeem Store

JustNeem’s glycerin-based Neem soap for face (and body) is a gentle alternative to traditional facial cleansers that often irritate and dry out sensitive facial skin. While it removes harmful germs and excess oil, it delivers the embedded anti-infective and healing properties of Neem directly to the skin. (Neem Tip!: Using the Neem Clay Mask next? Use warm water to open pores and prep skin for a deep, moisturizing cleanse.)

JustNeem’s Neem Clay Mask made with French Clay, Neem, and protective oils, permeates the skin on a deeper level.  Regular use of the mask helps detoxify facial skin and shrink pores.  Apply a thin layer and allow 15 to 20 minutes for the exchange of toxins being drawn from deep within and the infusion of healing Neem back into the skin tissue.  The mask has proven to help tremendously when follicle mites and bacterial irritations are involved with Rosacea. Use 2-3 times a week.

JustNeem’s lotion made with very light moisturizing oils – like Sunflower, Jojoba, and Coconut oils – is ideal for maintaining healthy skin as it adds long-lasting hydration, as well as the protective layer of Neem to decrease free radicals and shield from impending germs.

Gently massage a few drops of JustNeem’s Neem Cure oil into inflamed, red, and itchy skin. Within minutes, Neem’s anti-infective and anti-microbial barriers are activated and begin to sooth and provide comfort. Use as needed and feel relief from any discomfort in only minutes.

JustNeem Empowers Women Through Soap Making

In many other countries of the world, women are still suppressed and discriminated against. It is part of our mission at JustNeem to help provide a voice for women here and in Africa. Since the beginning of our work in Mauritania, West Africa, JustNeem has been teaching new skills to women in this part of the world.

Soap Making with JustNeem
JustNeem Soap Making

Since 2009, we have held soap making workshops for women living in the slums of Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania. We educate women there to use available natural resources to make quality soaps. These workshops help empower these women to start their own businesses by selling their soaps in the local markets.

We are honored to celebrate Women’s Equality Day with them. We are thrilled to see them support their families, improve their lives, and be a contributing part of Mauritanian society. Here are some of our photos of the wonderful women we work with in Mauritania. You can learn more about our work in Africa on our website: READ MORE HERE >>

If you have acne, you’d probably love to clear up your skin with a natural treatment. We all would! A natural, skin-soothing treatment that clears my face? We’d be all over that, right? That’s why we love Neem oil.

Natural Acne Treatment

In this blog we’ll explore what causes acne. Then we’ll look at conventional treatments for acne, how they effect the skin and how they compare to using Neem oil, and introduce JustNeem’s Acne Treatment Kit, AcNeem.

First, let’s take a look at what causes acne…

What causes Acne?

The common form of acne develops as a result of blockages in skin follicles. This results from pores getting clogged with dead skin cells and sebum, an oily/waxy substance that is secreted by microscopic sebaceous glands in the skin.

The natural function of these glands is to lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair. But when they become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, naturally occurring bacteria and fungi (like Propionibacterium acnes and Malassezia, formerly known as Pityrosporum) that are present on most people’s skin flora start feeding on fatty acids in clogged pores, where they can cause inflammation, redness, scarring or hyper-pigmentation – this is what we typically recognize as acne.

515_Acne_formation         Before and After

Conventional Acne Treatments & Their Effects on Skin

Conventional acne treatments work in at least 4 different ways, with higher-quality treatments providing multiple, simultaneous effects:

  1. Normalizing shedding into the pore to prevent blockage
  2. Killing bacteria and fungi
  3. Anti-inflammatory treatment
  4. Hormonal manipulation

The most common treatments for acne take the second approach. They use benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics to combat the bacteria that feed on the clogged pores.

Peroxides form highly reactive radicals that react with organic matter, including bacteria and fungi, thereby killing these microorganisms. These chemicals are also used for bleaching and, while they kill bacteria, they also destroy skin cells, which is why they are also used as a peeling agent. Benzoyl peroxide’s side effects include extreme dryness of the skin, redness, and peeling. People with sensitive skin may also suffer burning, itching, and possibly swelling of the skin.

More severe cases of acne are treated with topical or oral formulations of antibiotics such as tetracycline, erythromycin, clindamycin, and minocycline. However, antibiotics target only the bacterial aspect of acne, and due to a rapid increase of resistance, their effectiveness is becoming very limited. The list of side effects of antibiotic is long, but most troubling is their tendency to induce resistance.

Acne is caused by bacterial or fungal infection of the pores that leads to inflammation. And conventional treatments have harsh side effects and often lead to more problems.

So, is there a natural alternative that can help? We need something that’s naturally anti-bacterial and antifungal, and something that also helps reduce the inflammation caused by the irritated skin. It turns out Neem oil is one of the best natural treatments for acne. It has all the properties we need, without the negative side effects.

Natural Acne Treatment with Neem Oil

Studies show that the Neem tree has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that are a natural treatment for acne. There are many reasons it is beneficial and nourishing to the skin.

Neem_(Azadirachta_indica)_in_Hyderabad_W_IMG_6976

First of all, Neem oil and Neem leaves contain a cocktail of very potent, plant-derived anti-bacterial and anti-fungal molecules. These natural, botanical antibiotics and anti-fungals are part of the Neem tree’s defense system, protecting it from bacterial and fungal diseases.

Neem is also rich in Vitamin E, known to protect and repair skin. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals that damage collagen and result in skin dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles.

When incorporated into skin care products, Neem extracts can inhibit bacterial and fungal growth and also show anti-inflammatory properties. However, unlike benzoyl peroxide, Neem does not destroy skin cells and therefore does not result in dry skin. This is an important aspect, since dry skin is prone to breakage and becomes easily re-infected, thus perpetuating the cycle of infection, inflammation, and skin damage.

Neem oil and Neem pastes lubricate the skin and provide the nourishment it needs to become and stay elastic and strong. In addition, since Neem’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal molecules operate by several different mechanisms to synergistically stop bacterial and fungal growth, they cannot induce resistance.

An additional aspect of Neem is that it has been shown to facilitate wound healing providing an additional benefit to stressed and broken skin, that needs to be restored quickly so it can function as a protective barrier.

JustNeem’s AcNeem Kit, a Natural Solution for Teen and Adult Acne

Based on these principles, JustNeem has developed the natural and effective AcNeem line consisting of a five-step natural acne regiment.

Acne Cleanser  Acne Clay Mask  Acne Clarifying Toner  Acne Control Moisturizer  Acne Spot Treatment with Neem

AcNeem products provide the beneficial properties of Neem discussed above and are fortified with other naturally occurring components that are known to combat acne such as acetyl salicylic acid (ASA), commonly known as salicylic acid and originally found in the bark of willow trees.

How have YOU reclaimed the outdoors this summer?

Adios Outdoor Spray keeps away unwanted pests and lets you launch back into your passions. Gardening, yoga in the backyard, grilling out…

But don’t take our word for it; check out these stories about our all-natural, DEET-free spray. It works, and is great for your skin!

Here are some stories – and we’d love to hear yours! (You can share it in the comments below.)

——

Cynthia – wasn’t so sure at first…

“I was skeptical when I purchased my first bottle at a local store, but went on to buy five more to spread around to my friends. It does a wonder to keep the ticks, mosquitoes, and ants away out here in the wilds of Chatham County, NC. (Soothes any other little nicks and scratches one might have, too.)”

——

Janine – liberated from those deer flies!

“Adios Outdoor spray keeps away those very aggressive biting deer flies that show up in May here on the eastern shore in Maryland. My husband has a very severe allergic reaction to them. Now he can enjoy the outdoors without fear of being bitten.”

——

Anjeanette – flourishing and enjoying the garden again… plus, beating fleas, naturally!

“I will never again work in the yard or do any outdoor activity without my Adios! Last summer I was bitten several times by mosquitoes and found out after my eye swelled shut that I became allergic to mosquito bites. That was the one time I forgot to spray on the Adios. I was just going out to clean off the back porch and was only outside for a few minutes. When I spray my exposed skin with Adios, bugs avoid me at all haste!!!

Also, I discovered that it kills fleas on contact. After temporarily housing a lost dog, my two dogs inherited his fleas over night. After washing both my dogs, I sprayed them with Adios and worked it into their coats. My hands came away with dead fleas that didn’t come out in the wash. BTW, the neem in the spray instantly began healing the bites on my dogs skin too!!!”

——

Ashley – Hm, she’s smitten….

“This product is absolutely incredible!!! I just tried the soap, the lotion and the “Adios” and I cannot get enough of it!”

——

Anonymous — So adventurous, they prefer to remain nameless…

“Just got back from the Outer Banks, NC and used this product every day. We went to a deserted island where my fellow travelers used Off brand mosquito spray and they had more than 40 bites each (and some as many as 60). I used Adios and only had 2, one on my hand and one on my finger (where I had neglected to use the Adios). For two weeks I used this product and it works. The best part is that the ingredients are natural and you don’t worry about putting DEET on your body.”

——

Neem Oil and Insects

——

Tanya – used to be missing out, but now she’s outdoors — despite allergies!

“I love this spray!!! I’ve suffered from mild allergic reactions to mosquito bites for years, and have missed out on outdoor activities with my family as a result. I am so happy to have found something that is natural, good for my skin, and actually works. I will certainly be recommending this to friends and family.”

——

Lori – her daughter is loving life again…

“Wanted to let you guys know we’ve had GREAT results with Adios! Our daughter – who is violently allergic to mosquitoes – hasn’t been bitten once with this spray on. Love!”

——

Sherry —  Improved sales at her plant nursery!

“We own a nursery at the Outer Banks and the mosquitos were so bad last fall that they would bite our customers the minute they stepped out of their cars. This spring we were introduced to Adios. We gave it to our employees for a test run and tried it ourselves and were amazed as to how well it worked to keep these pests off our bodies. Last weekend, as customers were coming to our nursery, we greeted them with a squirt of the Adios and the result was amazing! People loved the smell, how it felt and most of all, how well it worked!”

——

Kelly - The bugs used to love her…

“Best natural stuff out there. Smells good and works really well. Mosquitoes love me and now they don’t like me.”

——

You? — Tell us how you reclaimed the outdoors with Adios!

Insert your story in the comments below! Tell us how you reclaimed your outdoors with Adios Outdoor Spray this summer. We’d love to hear it!

The History of Natural Remedies

Nature is a treasure chest full of unique and surprising solutions for many ailments we humans encounter. In fact, many plants are the source of some of the most powerful medical treatments modern medicine has at its disposal today!

To just name a few, Salicylic Acid, a molecule present in bark of Willow Trees, has been used as a remedy for head and toothaches. After its discovery by Bayer scientists about 100 years ago, it gained fame as Aspirin (Figure 1):

Salicylic Acid MoleculeSalicylic Acid Molecule copy 2

Penicillin (Figure 2), a compound produced by a fungus by the same name has revolutionized treatment of bacterial infections and has saved the lives of millions of people worldwide. This can also be said of Warfarin (Coumadin), a potent and widely used anticoagulant (blood thinner) that was originally discovered in Clover (Figure 3). The list goes on and on.

Penicillin Molecule   Untitled

But there are other plants with extraordinary medicinal properties that we do not know much about, simply because they are home to regions of the world that western societies traditionally had limited access to. However, in today’s world, that is changing as information technology creates access to these hidden treasures.

The Neem Tree: Source of Natural Skin Care

One of these amazing plants is the Neem Tree. Neem Trees are home to Southeast Asia where they have been known and used for over 4,000 years to treat a variety of health problems from chickenpox, diabetes, gum disease, and malaria, just to name a few. To the uninitiated, this reads like a laundry list of “everything,” but numerous research studies are putting scientific foundation under some of these traditional uses and are moving Neem out of the shadow of folklore medicine.

Neem trees growing in Sub-Saharan Africa Closeup of Neem Seeds & Leaves Neem seedlings ready to be planted!

To date, research labs around the world have purified over 150 different compounds from the leaves, bark, and seeds of the Neem Tree and determined some of their biological activities.

Compunds in Neem

The most prominent functions have been identified as:

  • Anti-fungal
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-viral
  • Insect repelling

This is no surprise, either! Like humans, trees are threatened by these same classes of microorganisms and need ongoing protection in order to survive. It is, therefore, easy to see that the production of such sophisticated molecules is part of the tree’s defense strategy against these bugs; the tree’s version of an “immune system.”

We want to share our newest video with you! It tells our story of why we do what we do. Please share it, but also READ ON and find out more.

JustNeem makes wonderful natural and healthy Neem body care products that are sold all across the United States. But, why do we make products with Neem from Africa?

Let’s start at the beginning.

Mauritania, West Africa

Mauritania, Africa Mauritania, three times the size of Arizona, is situated in northwest Africa with about 350 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Western Sahara on the north, Algeria and Mali on the east, and Senegal on the south.

Approximately 90% of Mauritania is desert or semi-desert. And as a result of years of severe drought, the desert continuous to expand. A year or even several years may pass without any rain in some locations.

A few quick facts:

  • Population: 3,460,000
  • Average annual income: $1,100
  • Over 23% live on less then $1.25 per day
  • Unemployment rate: 32%

Repeated cycles of drought and reduction of water and other natural resources have decreased the food supply in Mauritania. Many live in remote villages with limited income possibilities and limited ability to produce crops. In addition, the high cost of food makes Mauritanians some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world.

The Neem Tree

The Neem tree is an evergreen tree that is part of the mahogany family and is very common in India. The Neem tree thrives in the drier, desert-like climates. It grows well in places like Mauritania and is found growing naturally throughout the region.

For thousands of years, people of India have been using the Neem tree bark, leaves, fruit, seeds, and oil as their “village pharmacy” to combat health issues. Before JustNeem began working in Mauritania, the people of this region were unaware of this flourishing trees’ potential, using it as firewood and for shade only.

Having become aware of the Neem tree’s natural affinity to flourish in arid, desert climates, JustNeem got to work educating the local population in Nouakchott (the capital city of Mauritania) of the tree’s health benefits. We then secured land in the southern village of Kaedi and began building our Neem tree orchard and growing our mission “Planting Trees of Hope.”

Establishing The JustNeem Orchard

The purpose of the JustNeem Orchard is to utilize this natural resource and, in combination with the availability of land, create work and income for the Mauritanian population. With assistance from an economic development organization in Nouakchott, we have trained local farmers, built a solar water pump and water tower, and planted over 2000 Neem and Mango trees.

JustNeem pays farmers, who work at the orchard, for the raw material that the Neem trees produce. We pay farmers a fair wage for their work and in turn, they supply us with the dried Neem leaves and Neem oil that we use to make our natural body care products here in the United States. We use this naturally grown Neem in all our products because of its amazing soothing and healing skin care benefits.

What Else Does JustNeem Do In Mauritania?

  • Provide income through the harvesting and processing of Neem leaves
  • Plant Mango trees & vegetables in the orchard as a local food supply
  • Distribute Neem trees to local families to plant outside their homes
  • Teach locals how to use Neem leaves and oil as a medicinal resource for illness
  • Give soap-making workshops to local women to start their own soap businesses

What You Can Do

10% of the profit from sales of all JustNeem products go back to our Neem tree orchard in Mauritania and our mission “Planting Trees of Hope.” Please continue to support us by purchasing and sharing our products with your friends and family.

Thank you for your continued support in helping provide a better life for the people of Mauritania. Come grow with us just like Neem trees grow.
