How have YOU reclaimed the outdoors this summer?

Adios Outdoor Spray keeps away unwanted pests and lets you launch back into your passions. Gardening, yoga in the backyard, grilling out…

But don’t take our word for it; check out these stories about our all-natural, DEET-free spray. It works, and is great for your skin!

Here are some stories – and we’d love to hear yours! (You can share it in the comments below.)

——

Cynthia – wasn’t so sure at first…

“I was skeptical when I purchased my first bottle at a local store, but went on to buy five more to spread around to my friends. It does a wonder to keep the ticks, mosquitoes, and ants away out here in the wilds of Chatham County, NC. (Soothes any other little nicks and scratches one might have, too.)”

——

Janine – liberated from those deer flies!

“Adios Outdoor spray keeps away those very aggressive biting deer flies that show up in May here on the eastern shore in Maryland. My husband has a very severe allergic reaction to them. Now he can enjoy the outdoors without fear of being bitten.”

——

Anjeanette – flourishing and enjoying the garden again… plus, beating fleas, naturally!

“I will never again work in the yard or do any outdoor activity without my Adios! Last summer I was bitten several times by mosquitoes and found out after my eye swelled shut that I became allergic to mosquito bites. That was the one time I forgot to spray on the Adios. I was just going out to clean off the back porch and was only outside for a few minutes. When I spray my exposed skin with Adios, bugs avoid me at all haste!!!

Also, I discovered that it kills fleas on contact. After temporarily housing a lost dog, my two dogs inherited his fleas over night. After washing both my dogs, I sprayed them with Adios and worked it into their coats. My hands came away with dead fleas that didn’t come out in the wash. BTW, the neem in the spray instantly began healing the bites on my dogs skin too!!!”

——

Ashley – Hm, she’s smitten….

“This product is absolutely incredible!!! I just tried the soap, the lotion and the “Adios” and I cannot get enough of it!”

——

Anonymous — So adventurous, they prefer to remain nameless…

“Just got back from the Outer Banks, NC and used this product every day. We went to a deserted island where my fellow travelers used Off brand mosquito spray and they had more than 40 bites each (and some as many as 60). I used Adios and only had 2, one on my hand and one on my finger (where I had neglected to use the Adios). For two weeks I used this product and it works. The best part is that the ingredients are natural and you don’t worry about putting DEET on your body.”

——

Neem Oil and Insects

——

Tanya – used to be missing out, but now she’s outdoors — despite allergies!

“I love this spray!!! I’ve suffered from mild allergic reactions to mosquito bites for years, and have missed out on outdoor activities with my family as a result. I am so happy to have found something that is natural, good for my skin, and actually works. I will certainly be recommending this to friends and family.”

——

Lori – her daughter is loving life again…

“Wanted to let you guys know we’ve had GREAT results with Adios! Our daughter – who is violently allergic to mosquitoes – hasn’t been bitten once with this spray on. Love!”

——

Sherry —  Improved sales at her plant nursery!

“We own a nursery at the Outer Banks and the mosquitos were so bad last fall that they would bite our customers the minute they stepped out of their cars. This spring we were introduced to Adios. We gave it to our employees for a test run and tried it ourselves and were amazed as to how well it worked to keep these pests off our bodies. Last weekend, as customers were coming to our nursery, we greeted them with a squirt of the Adios and the result was amazing! People loved the smell, how it felt and most of all, how well it worked!”

——

Kelly - The bugs used to love her…

“Best natural stuff out there. Smells good and works really well. Mosquitoes love me and now they don’t like me.”

——

You? — Tell us how you reclaimed the outdoors with Adios!

Insert your story in the comments below! Tell us how you reclaimed your outdoors with Adios Outdoor Spray this summer. We’d love to hear it!

The History of Natural Remedies

Nature is a treasure chest full of unique and surprising solutions for many ailments we humans encounter. In fact, many plants are the source of some of the most powerful medical treatments modern medicine has at its disposal today!

To just name a few, Salicylic Acid, a molecule present in bark of Willow Trees, has been used as a remedy for head and toothaches. After its discovery by Bayer scientists about 100 years ago, it gained fame as Aspirin (Figure 1):

Salicylic Acid MoleculeSalicylic Acid Molecule copy 2

Penicillin (Figure 2), a compound produced by a fungus by the same name has revolutionized treatment of bacterial infections and has saved the lives of millions of people worldwide. This can also be said of Warfarin (Coumadin), a potent and widely used anticoagulant (blood thinner) that was originally discovered in Clover (Figure 3). The list goes on and on.

Penicillin Molecule   Untitled

But there are other plants with extraordinary medicinal properties that we do not know much about, simply because they are home to regions of the world that western societies traditionally had limited access to. However, in today’s world, that is changing as information technology creates access to these hidden treasures.

The Neem Tree: Source of Natural Skin Care

One of these amazing plants is the Neem Tree. Neem Trees are home to Southeast Asia where they have been known and used for over 4,000 years to treat a variety of health problems from chickenpox, diabetes, gum disease, and malaria, just to name a few. To the uninitiated, this reads like a laundry list of “everything,” but numerous research studies are putting scientific foundation under some of these traditional uses and are moving Neem out of the shadow of folklore medicine.

To date, research labs around the world have purified over 150 different compounds from the leaves, bark, and seeds of the Neem Tree and determined some of their biological activities.

Compunds in Neem

The most prominent functions have been identified as:

  • Anti-fungal
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-viral
  • Insect repelling

This is no surprise, either! Like humans, trees are threatened by these same classes of microorganisms and need ongoing protection in order to survive. It is, therefore, easy to see that the production of such sophisticated molecules is part of the tree’s defense strategy against these bugs; the tree’s version of an “immune system.”

JustNeem Body Care & Neem

Based on these principles, JustNeem has developed methods to gently extract these powerful biomolecules from the Neem tree and developed a line of skincare products that use Neem to support and maintain clear and healthy skin.

Indulge your skin with JustNeem’s natural beauty products! Care for your skin with our facial products, whole-body lotion and soaps, great smelling Neem Oil blendshaving products, and nail treatments.

JustNeem products were created with aromas that will give you a holistic and sensual experience; like your body has been gently touched by a tree that truly cares! Yes, Beauty Does Grow On Trees!

We want to share our newest video with you! It tells our story of why we do what we do. Please share it, but also READ ON and find out more.

JustNeem makes wonderful natural and healthy Neem body care products that are sold all across the United States. But, why do we make products with Neem from Africa?

Let’s start at the beginning.

Mauritania, West Africa

Mauritania, Africa Mauritania, three times the size of Arizona, is situated in northwest Africa with about 350 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Western Sahara on the north, Algeria and Mali on the east, and Senegal on the south.

Approximately 90% of Mauritania is desert or semi-desert. And as a result of years of severe drought, the desert continuous to expand. A year or even several years may pass without any rain in some locations.

A few quick facts:

  • Population: 3,460,000
  • Average annual income: $1,100
  • Over 23% live on less then $1.25 per day
  • Unemployment rate: 32%

Repeated cycles of drought and reduction of water and other natural resources have decreased the food supply in Mauritania. Many live in remote villages with limited income possibilities and limited ability to produce crops. In addition, the high cost of food makes Mauritanians some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world.

The Neem Tree

The Neem tree is an evergreen tree that is part of the mahogany family and is very common in India. The Neem tree thrives in the drier, desert-like climates. It grows well in places like Mauritania and is found growing naturally throughout the region.

For thousands of years, people of India have been using the Neem tree bark, leaves, fruit, seeds, and oil as their “village pharmacy” to combat health issues. Before JustNeem began working in Mauritania, the people of this region were unaware of this flourishing trees’ potential, using it as firewood and for shade only.

Having become aware of the Neem tree’s natural affinity to flourish in arid, desert climates, JustNeem got to work educating the local population in Nouakchott (the capital city of Mauritania) of the tree’s health benefits. We then secured land in the southern village of Kaedi and began building our Neem tree orchard and growing our mission “Planting Trees of Hope.”

Learn more about the Neem tree here.

Establishing The JustNeem Orchard

The purpose of the JustNeem Orchard is to utilize this natural resource and, in combination with the availability of land, create work and income for the Mauritanian population. With assistance from an economic development organization in Nouakchott, we have trained local farmers, built a solar water pump and water tower, and planted over 2000 Neem and Mango trees.

JustNeem pays farmers, who work at the orchard, for the raw material that the Neem trees produce. We pay farmers a fair wage for their work and in turn, they supply us with the dried Neem leaves and Neem oil that we use to make our natural body care products here in the United States. We use this naturally grown Neem in all our products because of its amazing soothing and healing skin care benefits.

See photos from our orchard in Mauritania here.

What Else Does JustNeem Do In Mauritania?

  • Provide income through the harvesting and processing of Neem leaves
  • Plant Mango trees & vegetables in the orchard as a local food supply
  • Distribute Neem trees to local families to plant outside their homes
  • Teach locals how to use Neem leaves and oil as a medicinal resource for illness
  • Give soap-making workshops to local women to start their own soap businesses

What You Can Do

10% of the profit from sales of all JustNeem products go back to our Neem tree orchard in Mauritania and our mission “Planting Trees of Hope.” Please continue to support us by purchasing and sharing our products with your friends and family.

Thank you for your continued support in helping provide a better life for the people of Mauritania. Come grow with us just like Neem trees grow.

Razor Burn

Cary, NC – This week Dr. Peter answers a question about sensitive skin and shaving.

“Dear Peter,

I have very sensitive skin, and I can’t shave more than once a week, otherwise my face will get very irritated and red.

I have sensitive skin to the point that I can only shave downward on my face, if I shave up I will have burning red bumps and ingrown hairs for 3 days.

I have tried all kinds of products for sensitive skin but none help. Can applying a Neem product be the cure?  What should I use? Please help!

Sincerely, Gary P.”

Dear Gary P.,

Razor burn happens when tiny cuts caused by the razor on the skin create small openings. The tiny openings may then allow bacteria to enter the skin and invade the deeper hair follicles.

How Neem Helps Razor Burn

JustNeem soaps, shaving soaps, and aftershave contain all natural Neem. Neem is naturally anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory and has been praised for its ability to heal and protect the skin from mild scrapes, cuts and abrasions from daily shaving.

Our Neem Shaving Soaps are high in glycerin which allows a very smooth glide. The shaving soap also contains Neem which helps heal and sooth the micro cuts that occur during shaving and keep infections at bay. Other ingredients include Vitamin E, Shea butter and other essential oils.

The Neem Aftershave includes sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, Neem infused sunflower oil, and Shea butter. This will help sooth irritated skin, serve as an anti-bacterial agent and keep the skin moisturized.

Here is our recommendation:

  1. Wash your face in hot water with Neem soap to cleanse the skin and soften the hair.
  2. Shave with Neem Shaving Soap
  3. Apply a thin layer of Neem Cure, to sooth and protect your skin if it feels especially sensitive or irritated.
  4. Finish with Neem Aftershave Lotion
  5. Also, be sure to disinfect your blade after shaving by rinsing it with rubbing alcohol. That will help kill bacteria on the blade.

We hope that helps! Let us know how this works for you.

Stay Well, Dr. Peter

Neem Oil and Insects

Just Say “NO” To Chemicals

Are you one of those people who love to be outside during spring and summer but then get eaten alive by biting insects? Bug bites can turn a fun day outside into a miserable experience. The problem is that in order to stop the bugs from biting we have been led to believe that we need to use very strong, and very toxic pesticides on our skin and bodies.

Go to the pharmacy and look at the bug sprays. You’ll find that in most insect repellents, even some that claim to be natural, are one of two pesticides: DEET or permethrin. DEET is known as the “gold standard” for insect repellents, but it is also highly toxic and not really suitable for children or pregnant women. Permethrin is a known neurotoxin that produces symptoms similar to those of DEET and also DDT. Some might say that the risks of these bug repellants out-weigh the benefits. Yuck!

Neem Oil & Other Natural Oils

The Neem tree has been used for thousands of years for its relief from the high temperatures of the summer and the biting insects that the season brings. In the sun and heat, this evergreen tree is a haven to many communities with its cooling shade. The Neem tree and those taking shelter under its canopy are also safe from bugs and biting insects because of its natural repellent action.

Scientific research has confirmed that Neem Oil is a powerful, natural insect repellent*. Neem Oil, pressed from the seeds of the Neem tree, is a mixture of bioactive components**. Azadirachtin is the most active component and naturally repels pests. Azadirachtin can also reduce the feeding and biting of insects. Furthermore, it interferes with insect hormone systems, making it harder for insects to grow and lay eggs.

Other natural ingredients and essential oils are also very good at deterring biting bugs. You may have even seen these in outdoor candles and sprays:

  • Lemongrass
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Citronella oil
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint

Finding Natural Outdoor Protection

Neem Oil can be found in garden supply stores made specifically for garden plants as a natural insecticide. But, to bring the powerful, natural, repelling qualities to your skin, look for cosmetic grade Neem Oil made solely for use in topical applications. You can find these Neem products at your local Whole Foods Market, or natural grocery store. Neem Oil is also non-toxic to children and pets which makes it wonderful for the whole family.

Outdoor sprays like JustNeem’s Adios*** contain Neem Oil blended with other essential oils named above that are very effective. You can also find Neem Oil in products like body lotions, toothpaste, cosmetics, soaps. You can even add our Neem Cure to your or your pet’s shampoo.

One unique and very useful property of Adios is that it can be used on insect bites to reduce the itching and swelling. Neem oil contains anti-histamines that are responsible for this effect.

Don’t let bugs get you down. Get out there and enjoy the great outdoors safely.

*** The EPA approved cold-pressed Neem oil as an insect repellent in 2010.

2013 was an amazing year for JustNeem. So much has changed for our little company. We have grown with new products, new awards, a new Corporate Office and many, many new, happy customers.

We are so proud to see our company grow, our customers happy, and our Neem Tree Orchard on the edge of the Sahara Desert grow with us. Thank you to all the Bloggers and Magazines that have given us so much encouragement. Here is a look back at the milestones 2013 brought our way.

The National Scene

Dr. Oz neem & JustNeem

In February 2013, our Neem Clay Mask & Neem Tub Tea appeared on The Dr. Oz Show (video). The show then went on to re-run in June. With the double airing of this episode of The Dr. Oz Show, we received so much attention from viewers, customers, and skin care professionals from all over the country and beyond.

“Within minutes of the show airing, our web sales went off the charts,” says Marketing Manager Leslie Huffman. COO Magda Radtke adds, “We significantly increased the production for all our products, but in particular for the Neem Clay Face Mask and Neem Tub Tea that both appeared on the show.”

JustNeem Awards

We also won our second Award from Natural Solutions MagazineOur Neem Clay Mask won the 2013 Beauty with a Conscience Award for “Best Face Mask”.

“These companies know that beauty and good-for-you go hand in hand, and they showcase the most honest ingredients on the health and beauty market today in their featured products,” states Natural Solutions editors.

Whole Foods Markets

In January of this year we announced the distribution of our best-selling Neem Clay Mask to additional Whole Foods Markets in the Pacific Northwest, Mid-Atlantic, North Atlantic, and Southeast regions. Due to the demand for products made with Neem, the Neem Clay Mask is now displayed in 78 Whole Foods Markets all across the country.

We are so thrilled to continue and expand our wonderful relationship with Whole Foods. This could not have been done without the support from our customers.

“Whole Foods has a commitment to carry the finest all natural skin and body care products available. They believe what we do: in natural, sustainable, high-quality merchandise that is good for you,” says COO, Magda Radtke

“Having the support from a company like Whole Foods Market is reassuring that we are making highly desirable products that are not only requested by consumers but also loved for their medicinal effects for skin care issues. Cary Magazine -

“JustNeem is part of an increasing number of for-profit companies with a social mission, known as B Corporations, which means growth for JustNeem increases its ability to help its partners in Mauritania. According to the company’s website, certified B Corps use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.”

Simply Stine -

“My favorite product that JustNeem sent me to try was the Body Polish. I loved it! It exfoliated my skin nicely and left my body soft and moisturized. I liked this exfoliant because I didn’t feel greasy after using it.

(Cuticle Care Pen) -This is something I now keep on my desk in my office and I find that my cuticles are much softer and look so much better. This pen features Neem extract, Jojoba Oil, Mango Butter and Vitamin E. This is perfect for anyone who has brittle, dry, weak nails. Also great for anyone with a nail fungus. It’s so easy to use and isn’t messy at all!

Ivory & Olive -

“(Neem Clay Mask) This mask leaves my skin feeling clean and soft. It also makes me feel like I’m practicing what I’m preaching. This Olive mask is a thumbs up for Ivory. Plus, this company has a mission to plant seeds of hope, it’s a winner all around.”

Run On Organic -

“This Body Polish smells like taking a deep breath of ocean air. It is like having a little container of the beach with you in your shower. The oily mixture and grittiness of this polish make it such a nourishing experience for your skin. The grit isn’t too abrasive, but just enough to remove the dead skin cells from the surface.

I love that JustNeem uses organic oils in this body polish. Most of the other ingredients are clean–as they do not use sulfates, parabens and phthalates in their product line.

Beautiful Basics -

“(Neem Clay Mask) I like to use this mask once or twice a week for 15 minutes and it makes a humungous difference it the texture, brightness, cleanliness, and quality of my skin. It leaves my skin looking great and feeling even better. If I feel a pimple coming on I just pop a little of this on the area and it seems to stop it dead in its tracks. It also makes my skin look much more radiant! It’s one of those masks where I just can’t stop touching my skin after using it.”

Domestic Sweetheart-

“Do you suffer from Acne? If so, you should check out the AcNeem product line from JustNeem Body Care which is specially made for acne prone skin. AcNeem Acne Daily Cleansing bar is gentle and very effective. I saw results within one week of using. I highly recommend this product if you have sensitive skin and are dealing with breakouts.”

Ginger & Aloe -

“I was super excited to try out the JustNeem Holiday Spa Gift set. Bathing in (Bath Salt) & Neem Tea is therapeutic, immune-boosting and soothing. Any kind of irritations or blemishes heal faster and it is a truly exquisite feeling afterwards. I wish we could just substitute the chlorine in our pools with Neem leaves.

(Green Tea Body Polish) The smell is wonderfully green and the scrub is massaging and mild, leaving the skin polished.

Neem Clay Face Mask is wonderful to use before your bath. Afterwards skin feels clean and clear and pores seem smaller.”

Mizz Review Lady -

“Upon opening the clay masks we smelled the invigorating scent of eucalyptus and mint. They were easy to apply, although some of us applied more than others. After the masks were removed, it left us with healthier skin that both felt and looked better. I have to admit, it was quite refreshing and all of the guests really seemed to enjoy it. “

Living The Good Life -

“As you know by now I suffer from acne (not as bad as I did in high school) but it’s more than I want to suffer from at 26 years old. This (AcNeem) acne daily cleanser is full of natural acne fighting botanicals. I love this daily cleanser. It leaves my skin feeling clean and I’ve noticed after using for a week or so that my black heads have gone away and I’m getting less pimples on my face. I’m hoping over time that my red spots will start to fade. Very nice and I highly recommend using.”

“I sometimes have patches of eczema on my skin. The winter is worse than the summer the patches itch like crazy and doesn’t look all that great. I recently found an extract called Neem that is really good for dry skin.I was able to try two products from JustNeem the first was the (Neem Body) lotion. I liked how long lasting the lotion was and how it hydrated my skin. I also received the Wind and Sea Neem soap which I really liked. I loved the refreshing scent! It helped energize my morning. “

You probably know that we make our body care products in Cary, North Carolina using Neem from Mauritania, West Africa.

But, did you know that your purchase of JustNeem products benefits communities in West Africa? Through our project Planting Seeds of Hope, these communities now have a way to provide for themselves.

The purpose of this project is to provide independence and economic security to those in this impoverished area of the Sahara Desert. Mauritanian communities generate income through the harvesting of Neem leaves, fruit, and oil while improving both the health of their land and community members. You can read more about Our Mission on our website, then enjoy these new photos.

Here are our most recent photos of Peter’s trip to our Neem Tree Orchard in Mauritania, West Africa.

Nouakchott

Nouakchott, Mauritania Africa

Peter took this photo as the plane landed in Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania, West Africa. From this photo you can see the concentrated area of the city. As the city moves outward into the desert, these areas become the slums of the city. This is where we stay and begin our work.

Birger's office

This is Birger, who is the Director of E Pod. E Pod is an economic development organization and our partner in the Neem Tree Orchard project we created. This is their office in the city of Nouakchott.

Soap making

Before Peter leaves for the Neem orchard, he meets with a local women who learned how to makes soaps through one of JustNeem’s workshops in Nouakchott. She now sells these soaps in the local markets.

Dried Neem Leaves

Here are some Neem tree branches that have been pruned, washed, and dried. Mauritanian women will strip the Neem leaves and then pulverize them into Neem leaf powder. This is a very important ingredient in the Neem soaps they sell in the market.

Sahara Desert camels

It is a six hour drive through the desert from the city of Nouakchott to the Neem Tree Orchard in Kaedi. Along the way, Peter saw these camels walking along in the Sahara. Not something we see here in the States.

On the road to Kaedi

A truck goes off the road and holds up traffic on the only road from Nouakchott to Kaedi. Everyone gets out to help.

The Neem Tree Orchard

At the Neem Tree Orchard

Finally arriving at the Neem Tree Orchard, Peter meets with Keneme, our orchard manager, and his team. From left to right is Keneme, Abou, Sammba, Ousman, and Peter.

JustNeem Shirts

The group takes a moment to exchange gifts. Peter gives the men who work at the orchard some shirts from JustNeem headquarters in North Carolina.

JustNeem hat

Keneme made this hat from two large gourds. He sewed them together and carved this beautiful decoration into the hat just for Peter. An amazing and thoughtful gift.

Neem Trees

Here is a photo of the Neem Tree Orchard. These Neem trees are two years old and growing nicely. They will not blossom or produce fruits until they are approximately five years old. They’ll be in great hands with Keneme and his team taking care of them.

Water Tower

This is the water tower that we built last year. As you can see at the base, the drip irrigation hoses carry the water from the tower to the field. This keeps the trees nourished in the hot desert sun.

Time for lunch

Food is carried to the orchard, cooked on the spot and then shared by all.

Meal time

Gathering under the shade of the Neem trees, this is what meal time is like in the desert.

Mango Trees

Here are some of the Mango trees that also grow in our orchard. At the time of this photo, the Mango trees were infested with very large locusts that were eating the leaves.

Natural pesticide

Peter formulates an all natural pesticide made from Neem seeds to keep the locusts off the mango trees. Neem is a powerful natural repellant and will protect the trees against the invading insects. In the top left photo there are fresh Neem seeds and dried Neem seeds. Peter crushes the dried seeds into a powder using a rock. He soaks the powder overnight in water and adds a little soap.

Natural pesticide

In the morning Peter filters the Neem liquid and sprays the Mango trees. The natural Neem spray does the job. The locusts no longer feast on the trees. Neem is so amazing! It has been a successful trip.
