Giving Back JustNeem envisions a flourishing African continent. We believe that all human beings have the right to support themselves and their families through work. Therefore, we are partnering with like-minded NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that work with villagers in Mauritania, West Africa, to discover local resources and to establish economic opportunities for the local people. One of these resources, the Neem tree, can be used to generate income for families simply by planting the tree and selling its leaves and fruit. It has the additional benefit of giving shade in a hot desert climate and offering its medicinal benefits to the tree owner’s family. We are working in partnership with local NGOs in Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital city, to help create jobs centered around this tree. With proceeds from our 2006 soap sales, we are currently funding the planting of Neem trees in neighborhoods surrounding Nouakchott and a pilot garden with Neem trees grown from seeds. In the near future, we plan to purchase all our Neem raw material from existing Neem tree owners in Mauritania, paying them a fair market price for labor and goods. December 2007 Update In mid-December, 2007, Peter Radtke and Bill Criswell flew to Mauritania to confirm the collaboration agreement with an NGO in Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania. We had begun to talk about working together during our last visit in the spring. On their last day in the country, they received a 25 kg Neem order for JustNeem that was delivered and shipped home to us the next day in an overstuffed suitcase. Back home we were thrilled to receive our first order of 'real' Mauritanian Neem! For further information, please contact us at info@justneem.com.
